Valencia is a city where different societies have blended together, making it one of Spain’s greatest symbols of cultural richness. The historic centre or Ciutat Vella is home to numerous must-see sites of great cultural interest:
Today, the Plaza de la Almoina is an archaeological interpretation centre for remains of the ancient Roman city. Interactive services are available to visitors. And no trip is complete without checking out the Almudín museum, just a few metres from the square. Formerly an Islamic alcázar, it was transformed into a granary during the Christian era but has maintained much of its original charm (admission €2).
The Cathedral was constructed between the 7th and 15th centuries, on the site of a former mosque. It was slow to complete, with its construction taking place across the centuries and as such reflects numerous styles, including Romanesque, Gothic, Cistercian, Baroque, and Neo-classic. The dome crowning the transept is of great artistic value, as is the bell tower or Micalet (admission €5 with audio guide).
In the ***Plaza del Mercado*** we find the Lonja de la Seda (number 31), an exquisite example of the Valencian Gothic style (admission €2).
This entire spot was fortified for the last time during the 15th century and it still has its incredible fort doors that appear to be immune to the wear and tear of time: the Torres de Quart and the Torres de Serranos, at either end of the Ciutat Vella.
